                                                    Not So Fun Adventure

Williamsburg attracts tourists because of its historical building and sites, including the plantations. What I did for my “fun week off of school” was visit the Sherwood Forest Plantation with my best friend, Lance. Neither of us have been to any of the plantations around Williamsburg. The funny thing about our adventure to Sherwood was that it didn’t go as expected.

As we were making our way to Sherwood, Route 5 was covered on both sides with tall, gorgeous trees. The best part about this road was that it was wide open for us to enjoy the open view. The closer Lance and I got to Sherwood, the more we started to see the open fields with wheat, corn, and hay. What I loved most about the drive was that, once we hit that open field area, it felt like I went from small town Williamsburg to the middle of nowhere in Colorado.

After driving for a good thirty minutes, my friend and I pulled up onto the unpaved parking lot of the plantation. The parking lot was very small; it could probably only hold about fifteen cars at the most. Before we started to leave the parking lot, Lance and I came across a little bird house with brochures and a glass protected template. The template and the brochures were saying the typical information about the plantation; however, we weren’t concerned about it. The reason why is because the pathway towards the house itself looked deserted. It was just us two standing alone on the pathway looking toward this big, old, rustic house. This is where the “fun” started to happen. As we approached the house, Lance brought up the fact that he hadn’t seen a single soul yet. Noticing the emptiness of the place, we began looking for someone to help us. We started off on the right hand side of the house by looking into the servant headquarters. We heard strange noises coming from the inside the closer we got. When I got within a foot of the servant house, I tried opening the door to it but it wouldn’t budge; oddly enough, when I tried budging the door, the noises from inside stopped. Already freaking out, I quickly turned away and began my journey back to the front porch of the house.

Lance is one of those people who rarely get scared of things; therefore, I always volunteer him to do stuff that doesn't seem right to me. As we made our way up the stairs to the porch, we noticed that the front door had a doorbell and one of those boxes that you can call someone on the inside. Lance proceeded to press both of the buttons, but it wasn’t till he pressed the box’s button that the creepiest thing happened. Instead of getting a “hello”, we heard a low hum coming from it. Officially creeped out with the place, I decided that I was going to head back to the car and leave. However, Lance wanted go in the backyard of the house and see what was there. We circled around to the back of the house and came across a fence about a hundred yards from the house. I noticed a break in the middle of the fence and decided to go and check it out. As we got closer we noticed that it was a mini trail leading through the forest. We proceeded to go through, but within the first ten feet of walking, we came across a mini “no trespassing” sign. Lance was freaking out because I continued to walk past the sign, but I was more curious about what another sign I had found said. It read “Beware of Dog” in all capital letters. This sign was bigger, and was hand made with blue paint and white lettering across from it.  As I got closer, I couldn’t help but realize something big moving above the sign. When I was about ten feet away from the sign, I noticed that it was huge black snake hanging from the tree.

After being at the plantation for forty five minutes, Lance and I decided to sprint back to the car after seeing the snack and spend the rest of the day at the beach. We figured going to the Sherwood Forest Plantation would be fun because we could learn more about John Tyler’s family and how people lived back then. However, after the noises and seeing that giant snake, we both decided that we had seen enough and were done for the day.
